ECD ARCHITECTS ANNOUNCES ITS SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS FOR THE GREENEST TOWER REFURBISHMENT IN LONDON

ECD Architects (Energy Conscious Design) have submitted proposals to LB Hammersmith & Fulham for the transformation of three Local Authority tower blocks in Shepherds Bush. The development is intended to become an exemplar of sustainable tower block regeneration and a flagship renewable energy project scheme for the Borough.

The vision for the existing 24-storey tower blocks on the Edward Woods Estate includes extensive overcladding and rooftop extensions to significantly enhance the energy efficiency of the existing dwellings and improve their visual appearance.

Furthermore, the scheme will incorporate the largest building-integrated renewable energy array in London, generating solar and wind-powered electricity for the buildings’ communal facilities and greatly reducing CO2 emissions attributed to the buildings.

H&F Homes, the ALMO responsible for the project, have put together a broad strategy for the development which will add value to the towers by creating four super-insulated low-carbon flats at each tower’s roof level, and converting under-utilised storage areas at ground level into office space for rent to local charitable organisations.

ECD Architects and their consultants Energy for Sustainable Development have established the viability of the renewable energy aspects of the scheme and are seeking approval for a total of 150kWp of photovoltaic panels, 30m² of solar thermal collectors and six 6kW roof-mounted wind turbines across all three blocks. Tower residents were extensively consulted throughout the design stages and have shown widespread support for the ‘green’ aspects of the development.

Other proposed works include redecoration of lifts and landings, enhancement of the recycling collection areas, and improved satellite reception equipment. All these measures are intended to extend the life of the buildings beyond current expectations and significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the estate.
